Good day ladies and gents. Spring is in the air and it’s almost time to start cleaning those new consoles after hours of first-day patches and mandatory downloads from the disappointments over winters releases . Amidst the slow and droll Tier A titles, Playstation Plus’ monthly free games are an invaluable source of free entertainment for those willing to pay the price for the online services. One of these amazing wellsprings is brought to us by developers Dynamighty with the company’s first release, CounterSpy, a semi 2D stealthy sidescroller bound to give you more than just a semi. Set in the time of the Cold War, players take control of an agent for C.O.U.N.T.E.R., a mysterious organization who conveniently has the world’s best interest in mind, as you’re sent to prevent the Socialists and the Imperialists from swaffling the moon as a result of their nuclear dick swinging competition.
You’ll be hooked from the very beginning. Especially as the music kicks in, it’s pretty much right out of a long, lost James Bond soundtrack. Connery Bond too, none of the Timothy Dalton shit. The animation might seem strangely familiar, almost nostalgic, which could be largely due to the developer’s backgrounds in PIXAR and LUCASARTS. The gameplay/graphic combination is very refreshing. The controls are simple and laid out well. Allowing espionage to become involuntary as you tip toe through the randomly-generated levels in search of launch plans, weapon blueprint and formulas, all of which will aid you in your clandestine mission to prevent nuclear fallout. The armed guards that patrol the secret locations you infiltrate don’t miss a fucking trick either, and if any of those soldiers are suspicious of illicit activity, they will phone it in and have them raise the DEFCON level. That of course, is a bad thing because once raised past DEFCON 1, you will have exactly 60 seconds to haul ass and prevent the nuke from ass ramming the moon into radioactive confetti.
This game is extremely satisfying and incredibly pleasing to look at. It’s just an overall enjoyable experience, and to not give it a chance especially while it’s available for free is foolish. Not only does Dynamighty deserve the attention for making such an awesome and fun game that is both challenging and rewarding, we as gamers deserve this game to give us a much needed cleansing of the palette as we’re forced out of our modern day element of open world gaming. An element the market is somewhat oversaturated with. CounterSpy is there to even the odds and score major points for sidescrollers on the new generation of consoles.
